First Plus-Size Fashion Show in New York Fashion Week

A typical image conjured in the minds of people when the term "fashion model" is mentioned is that of a ridiculously thin woman who seems to be bordering on being anorexic. Indeed, with the way we demonize people by calling them names for being overweight and fat, it only goes to show how this society worships being thin.

Not so fast, though. A large segment of this society still wants to be realistic with their models. Only very few people in this world are that thin. Most people are considered to be a little overweight when compared to the conventional fashion model, but at least they would add a little realism to the stage if ever these full-figured women are called on stage.

Thus, it's good to hear that New York Fashion Week will have its very first fashion show participated by plus-size models. Plus-sizes are considered to be sizes measured to be between size 14 and 16. It is not officially a part of the fashion week, but it will also be held at the Lincoln Center on September 16, in between some major shows scheduled throughout this major fashion event.

This just reflects a trend sprouting among high-end fashion designers. As more and more Americans go overweight, they probably thought it's high-time that they accommodate women who are in this size range and come out with an entire product line dedicated to them. From retailers like Mark Jacobs and Forever21 to fashion magazines like Vogue, there's really a larger space (pun intended) dedicated to women who are considered to be plus-size. Maybe they realized that this segment of the industry is underserved--even though they probably have larger spending powers than those in other segments.

For the very first time, plus-size women are invited to join the party once dominated by alarmingly thin women. It's now a more open industry. And I'm glad that we are now trying to see that change. The standards of beauty may just change sooner than later.
