Reality shows may not be as popular among the general population as they was a few years ago (the peak of Survivor and The Amazing Race), but variants of the reality genre remain to cater the female teen market segment. Teens are still intrigued by this genre because of the personalities that the reality show characters exhibit. Shows like Keeping Up with the Kardashians are not even actual contests anymore, but a mere show detailing the prosperous life of some celebrities.
Then there are still those contests that have been running on for a long time. In my mind, one of the most popular shows ever to be consumed by the female teen market (and the larger female audience in general) is America's Next Top Model. Now running on its 18th season, very few reality shows out there could claim to run this long, let alone those reality shows with the same target demographic. The premise behind the show is quite simple: use female teens' fascination with fashion and turn this into a competitive circuit wherein the winner will be given lucrative modelling contracts and the chance to be America's next top model. Of course, we all know that none of the winner's of any of ANTM's cycles ever became a supermodel, but the effort was there and opportunities like this to crash into the world of modelling come very rarely. After all these cycles, people who are interested in fashion are also bound to pick something up when it comes to proper projection and clothing choice. And even if you do not have any plans to enter the fashion world, all the drama and controversy associated with the show is bound to make a lot of people hooked. For all its controversy, the reality show has stayed on for more than 8 years and counting. This should be enough indication that female teens love the drama mixed with actual fashion bits.
