Fashion ArticlesSeoul government orders Fendi to remove fur items on the runway
The use of fur as material for clothing products is nothing new or extraordinary among luxury fashion houses. The elite's desire for opulent materials pushed the systematic "harvesting" of fur for clothing products, and this has also been systematically criticized by various animal welfare groups worldwide. The same fashion houses are already used to these opposition groups, but this is probably only the first time that the animal welfare groups succeeded in forcing a government to ban fur on the runway.
Italian fashion house Fendi is now forced to remove fur pieces from its collection for its largest autumn-winter show in Asia after the city government of Seoul gave the order. The fashion show will be held in two weeks on an artificial island in the Han River. This will be the first time that a fashion show will be held on Korea's government land. Citing protests from various animal welfare groups, Seoul's government said that it cannot allow fur coats to be modeled during the fashion show. This means roughly half of the 40 or so items in Fendi's autumn-winter collection. Fendi, a high fashion house for its fur creations, may have to seriously alter the format of the show following this order. That presents a logistical nightmare especially if the items are already in South Korea. Organizers of the show claimed that it is a surprising move, given that no such orders were given during the many months of negotiations between the fashion show organizers and the city government. The city government was quick to answer that this was the first time a fashion show is going to be held on government land, so they were not exactly sure what to expect from such events. Thousands of personalities, including Korean celebrities, are expected to attend the event. It makes me wonder how Fendi will pull this off when it only has half the collection remaining. Organizers say that they are still in re-negotiation talks with city officials. Let's wait and see. You can talk about...
