As long as there's inequality in the income that people from all over the world get, some people will always be able to buy more things than others. Thus, we have a specific segment of the economy dedicated primarily to those who can afford expensive goods. In fashion, this segment for luxury goods has been come to be called as "high fashion."
But aside from the sky-high price of goods, what else does the term signify? Surely, you wouldn't be able to fly to the skies if you wore a pair of stilettos from Ferragamo even if you wanted to, would you? Apparently, a lot of people have taken this as a license for them to feel higher than everyone else in the room. You'll sometimes feel the same way with watches. Just because you're wearing a lowly Swatch, someone else in the room acts all superior to you because he has a Rolex with him. What's up with that? In case you haven't figured it yet, fashion is arrogant. What is "in" in the fashion world is cool at the moment. Everyone else who goes against the rules that fashion sets is out of touch, a valid cause of ridicule from the zombies who adhere to these much-touted rules. Ironically, this is my greatest frustration in fashion. It has learned to build a wall around itself to maintain its so-called exclusivity. Unfortunately for us, the capitalist system won't seem to go away anytime soon. Though there are hiccups here and there, it's still a strong system with a lot of potential in the long run. Because of that, inequality in income will still be there. Certain companies will still try to sell to the upscale part of the market, and certain individuals will feel special that they are able to purchase these much-luxurious goods--sometimes too special that they hit the people around them who aren't able to afford (or those who don't bother to anyway) to purchase the same things.
