With so many fashion shows going on everywhere in the world's major cities, it sometimes becomes difficult to determine what the world's top fashion city actually is. All I know back then is that the global fashion world is dominated by cities like New York, London, Paris, and Milan. But some entities are just too crazy with rankings that they want to know what really is the biggest buzzword in the fashion scene.
And it shows, according to a poll by Global Language Monitor, that New York is actually the world's top fashion city for 2009, regaining the top spot from last year's Milan. Prior to 2009, New York ruled as the number 1 fashion city for five years, until economic problems settled in and affected the fashion scene in the Big Apple. Now recovering from the slump, New York is considered to be the world's fashion mecca again. So how does exactly is the poll done? Global Language Monitor is actually a US-based non-profit group that tracks that tracks the frequency of words and phrases in media outlets, both traditional and offline. This way, it is able to monitor where the biggest happenings in the fashion world occurs. Aside from New York regaining the top position, one noticeable thing in the list is the rise of cities in Asia and Australia. In fact, this is the first year in the poll's history wherein the five traditional fashion cities (New York, London, Paris, Milan, and Rome) didn't dominate. Just behind New York in the list is Hong Kong, followed by London, Paris, Los Angeles, Milan, Sydney, Miami, Barcelona, and Madrid. It is a curious thing in a way that it may be a sign of things to come. We might actually see more Asian cities making a big influence in the fashion world, which is interesting because we have always been used to a Western touch when it comes to these things.
